At first glance it might seem odd that as an Americanist I am using my blog to promote a portal to African History websites, but as many of you will know, we are all Atlanticists now and so anyone studying the history of the Americas must also become an expert in Africa too!
This is one of the reasons that Atlantic history is so difficult for students to grasp. They have to become aware of the histories of a number of Europeans nations and West African as well as the Americas.
So, if you are teaching in this field, and naturally have thousands of resources for America, hundreds for Europe but very few for Africa, then this site will be of much use to you. Please click here to go to the Stanford University African resources page.
It boasts a range of secondary sources such as articles or collections of conference papers as well as primary materials that will be of use to your students. It also contains chronologies and summaries that will be useful for students coming to the topic completely fresh.
Of course there are the usual problems faced by any portal of out of date or broken links, but the vast majority do seem to be functioning. So, have a play and see what you can find. Or better still, ask your students to do the same!
