I’ve talked about the future of newspapers before. It’s a subject I find fascinating for a number of reasons.
For the last 12 year, I’ve only worked in the online advertising industry. Online advertising has seen a massive growth in the last decade whilst the newspaper industry has seen a corresponding decline.
‘Where will it end?’ is the question that many people are asking.
Will newspapers disappear completely or will they find a new role for themselves in the digital era?
Well, Eric Alterman has written a great article about this very subject in The New Yorker. As he points out,
“Until recently, newspapers were accustomed to operating as high-margin monopolies. To own the dominant, or only, newspaper..was, for many decades, a kind of license to print money.“
It was this key point that had me nodding my head and going ‘aha, mmm, yes’ under my breath! Because it was the ‘take it or leave it’ arrogance on the part of newspaper groups that led to the creation of jobs.ac.uk 10 years ago.
But, before I start my rant about extortionate newspaper advertising rates, why don’t you pop over to the ‘Out of Print’ article and form your own opinion. Or, better still, leave your views below…
