Returning to the job market after a considerable break can feel like swimming against the tide. There’s no denying that it can be tough but with the right approach it doesn’t have to be too painful.
In this post we’re going to look at some of the common issues and look at some strategies to help you overcome some of the more common barriers.
Have a look at the list below and see if any of these barriers sound familiar:
- You lack any recent experience or references
- You have a wide range of experience with no discernible specialism
- You’ve lost all your hard earned confidence
Family circumstances can also make it difficult to:
- Take on lower paid work due to childcare costs
- Accept longer hours or late shifts
- Commute long distances
- Relocate
Bring yourself up to date
After a long break from work it can be difficult for an employer to take you on as you have nothing recent to speak of. Volunteering can be a great way to get back on the horse, helping you to build up your work confidence and get that all important up to date reference.
You could also consider doing a qualification in your chosen area to help you find your feet and become more employable.
Use your network
Using your network can be one of the most efficient ways of finding work.
Networking can help you to:
- Find out about unadvertised opportunities
- Hear about opportunities before they are advertised giving you the upper hand
- Get a personal recommendation
- Get taken on by someone who knows you and your talents
Whilst networking may not come naturally to you, one thing to remember is that although it feels uncomfortable to ask someone for advice, a lot of people love to give it. Don’t be scared to ask for a little help as you never know what opportunities may be put your way.
Work towards your goal
Remember, it might be difficult to get everything you want in a job straight away. You might need to take a job that doesn’t match all your needs to get yourself back on the ladder. Once you’re in a job it can be easier to get another job, so taking small steps back to where you want to be could be the way forward!
