So, here at jobs.ac.uk we have been publishing vast amounts of research, academic and scientific jobs for a couple of decades now. Last year alone, we placed some 70,000 adverts! Normally, after each advert closes, we expire the advert and archive it. However, as the world’s population of researchers expands and conversations increasingly turn to job security and availability, we thought that our archived data could be put to better use. Our data could contribute meaningfully to these debates.
Job advert data stored on our system is, like most digital data, messy. It is not collected and stored in a way that lends itself easily to being analysed and interpreted. As a start, we have experimented with some new data visualisation tools (thank you rawgraphs.io!) to highlight where in the world are universities, or other research intensive organisations, that are looking for academics and researchers depending on their research disciplines.
The alluvial diagram below is based on the actual advert volumes placed on jobs.ac.uk over the last 12 months. It represents the top ten places from where organisations are approaching jobs.ac.uk to help them find the best talent in the world. The focus of this particular diagram is on the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities roles, since these tend to be overshadowed in the current STEM climate.
